What is Brown Fat and How Would Coffee Help? There are two types of fat cells in your body.  White adipose tissue (WAT) stores a large drop of fat for future use.  The word “adipose” means fat and the word “tissue” indicates substance, so these are fat substance cells. It’s just storage.

The Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is what we’re looking at here.  Brown fat cells hold a few small droplets of fat and brown colored mitochondria which makes the cell look brown. The mitochondria have been termed mini-furnaces as these are the agents that burn the fat. They also contain iron. Its whole purpose is to generate heat. It burns glucose heavy foods like fruit to do this. They’re considered “good fat”.

Brown fat was found 10 years ago. It was first found in babies, who can’t shiver when cold, so the fat cell reacts to the cold and burns fat to generate heat and keep the baby warm. Later, these cells disappear, probably what we’ve called losing baby fat.

More recently, it was discovered that adults still had brown fat cells, mostly in the chest area. They continue to burn sugar and fat when it’s cold. These are the cells that it’s believed coffee stimulates. The thinking is that stimulating brown fat cells to burn fat will help with weight loss.

How Can Coffee Burn Fat?

Right now, the focus is on caffeine content. Later studies will look at other attributes of coffee to see the effects of those on weight loss. It’s believed, also, that the warm feeling you get from coffee contributes to fat burning. Exercise and a good night’s sleep help you lose weight, too.


Who Did the Study?

The study was done by researchers at the University of Nottingham and Harold Sacks at UCLA School of Medicine. The results were reported in the journal Scientific Reports.

How was the Study Done?

It started by making cultures using mouse stem cells. Coffee was tested on the stem cells in varying amounts, to see the effects. When exposed to caffeine, metabolism increased, the mitochondria generated more energy, more fat was burned and once the optimal amount of coffee was found to get these results, it was decided to try it on humans, since mouse cells weren’t the same as ours.

Next, nine human volunteers were given either a caffeinated drink or water. They averaged 27 years of age and a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 23. The volunteers wore loose clothes, did no vigorous exercise, caffeine, drugs or alcohol within 9 hours of the study. Thermal imaging of heat generated in the lower neck and shoulders, both before and thirty minutes after drinking a coffee weight loss drink or water showed results that water didn’t and caffeine did, generate heat.

So, does coffee help you lose weight? The jury’s still out on that. Although caffeine helps stimulate brown fat cells, there could be other ingredients in weight loss coffee that could contribute to weight loss that is still to be studied.

Changes in metabolism, how quickly your coffee burn fat, could change cholesterol and fat levels in your body. If brown fat generates more energy, it could help improve blood sugar/glucose levels, improve blood lipid levels and help burn calories. If the right coffee compound could be found, it could be used in medicines for weight management and diabetes control.

It’s suggested that you drink no more than three cups of coffee a day. Too much coffee or caffeine is taken in the afternoon could interfere with sleep and stimulate appetite, both of which would defeat the purpose. Cream and sweeteners could defeat the purpose, as well.
